Points You Should Know Before Making Homemade Skincare
Choose The Right Formula
You should consider the ingredients that can nourish your skin. At the same time, the product should have Consistency that is necessary for proper application. For this, you need to know how ingredients react.
For exampe Lemon should be avoided as it can cause phytophotodermatitis which is an anti inflammatory reaction when your skin is exposed to the sun.
Use Natural Preservative System
If your skin care product is based on water, fruits, organic ingredients or contains water-absorbing ingredients, they are most likely to spoil. You should consider including a natural preservative that protects your product from mold, yeast, or bacterial growth.
Products containing water, fruits or organic ingredients are more likely to spoil.
When choosing a preservative, make sure you use broad spectrum. This is effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and mold. Always check usage instructions to ensure your preservatives work as intended.
Benzoic acid, Salicylic acid, Sorbic acid and Alcohol are the commonly used natural preservatives in skincare.
Choose The Correct Container
Choosing a proper container for your product is very important as ingredients in your product tend to lose their effectiveness when exposed to light and air.
You should look for containers that have minimal contamination chances in your daily usage. Pump spray valve containers are great for water-based products as they do not expose your product to the environment.
Measure Your Ingredients Correctly And Follow Usage Recommendations
If you dont weigh your ingredients properly, it will lead to inconsistency and your product wont be effective. You need to have a precise weighing scale to weigh your ingredients properly for your formulation.
If you are dealing with liquid ingredients like essential oils, their volume depends on density and temperature. It is easy to add more quantities when measuring in drops. The same applies to preservatives also.
To avoid damaging your skin, you should strictly follow the recommended usage levels as per the amount of product you are preparing.
Measure And Adapt pH
pH of your product impacts the look, feel, color, scent, and how your ingredients interact with each other. So checking the pH of your product is a very important step.
Your chosen preservatives will work efficiently only if your product is at a certain pH level. Overlooking this will spoil your product and makes it unsafe to use.
You can check your pH with a pH meter or with easily available pH strips so that you can make proper formulation.
Making your own skincare products is a great way to customize your product according to your requirement as well as avoiding products with harmful ingredients.
Following strict weighing of ingredients and proportions, you will be able to make your own product safe to use and long-lasting.
